Adding a 200kb image increases project by 2mb??

Hello,

I've got 3 images in my project, each under 200k in size. The project size, however, is now up to 5.8mb! I tested, adding the 3rd image, and the project jumped up nearly 2mb.

Is there a specific reason for this? The images are iPad-retina sized, perhaps GS is making copies? If so, will the final size be inclusive of all the copies or just the copies needed for whatever device the user is on?

(I'm making a photo-heavy app, and need to keep track of size)

What image format are your 200k images in? If they're .JPG, that's why - GS will convert to not-especially-optimized .PNG images.

Your best bet is to save directly to .PNG images to avoid the conversion, though .PNG will typically result in significantly larger files sizes than .JPG.

Free OSX .PNG image optimizer that works pretty well: http://imageoptim.com/
    And for Windows: http://www.webresourcesdepot.com/png-optimizer-for-windows-pnggauntlet/

Both usually work better than even Photoshop's PNG optimization export.

If you are on OS X then ImageAlpha is your friend.

Yeah, use ImageAlpha, or ImageOptim - I suggest to use the second first - it's compressing your images without quality loss. And if this doesn't help, use ImageAlpha.

Cool, thanks guys. I'm going to first look into Unity again, since I'll need to use server connectivity on the 2nd version either way -- it'd be much better to have it on the first!

However, I found that GS has helped me figure out the logic of the game pretty nicely, so no doubt I'll continue to use it for other projects and maybe a bit more on this, if not for publishing, than simply for working out the logic in a more visual form!
