Introducing the GameSalad Distribution Network

Hi everyone,

Today we’re excited to announce the launch of a new and powerful feature for the GameSalad Community – the GameSalad Distribution Network (GSDN). After speaking with many of you over the years, one of the biggest challenges facing the indie community is the issue of discoverability. With big publishers moving into mobile gaming and spending large media budgets to acquire players, indie developers have struggled to break into the top charts and acquire new players at a reasonable cost. At the same time, new acquisition techniques have emerged and many savvy developers have benefited from utilizing cross-promotion tactics to acquire players without spending an exorbitant marketing budget. With this in mind, we set out to build a GameSalad Distribution Network – one that leveraged cross-promotion techniques to take advantage of the thousands of games and millions of players throughout the GameSalad universe.

Over the past month, we’ve been testing our cross-promotion technology with a handful of internal games and the results have been quite impressive, with some games more than doubling their revenue during that time. We’re now ready to release the first phase of the GSDN, which will initially replace the More Games button on Basic (non-Pro) games published to iOS. We will promote a variety of high quality games, including select Game of the Month winners as well as several Ice Cap games.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue to optimize the technology in preparation for the second phase of the GSDN, which will allow Pros to include the cross-promotion technology in their games and receive traffic in exchange for referring traffic out to other GS games. We think this is a great way for Pro developers to acquire new players at no cost and grow the overall player base within the GameSalad network of games.

Cheers,

Steve

    Sounds good, how will stage two work? Can we select categories of games similar to ours so relevant games appear?

    That is a great idea! I had concerns about developers trying to do this themselves but with GameSalad's backing and infrastructure it seems like a win-win.

    In your game "Gem Breaker" with Ice Cap I saw some ads of Cheese Man, Spooky Hoofs and Zig Zag Zombies.
    Is this the new GSDN ?!?

    Great, I'm really looking forward to this! I was just checking out Chartboost... Is it basically the same as how the cross promotion works for that (and Direct Deals)? Any plans for Android implementation as well?

    @SF

    Great news!

    2 Questions...

    1. Can Basic Members have their games featured in the GameSalad Distribution Network, if they are of great quality?

    2. How obtrusive is the replacement to the 'More Games' Button? (a screenshot of it would be ideal, otherwise you could tell me in words :) )

    I had to admit though - my heart skipped a beat when I saw this new thread. Thought it was the new UB we've been waiting for. But this turned out great, too! :D

    @Chakku The initial post said that only Pro members and select GOTM winners will be included in the network.

    @LiquidGameWorks

    I think you misread, my friend :)

    It does not say anything about this network being Pro/GOTM-exclusive; only "variety of high quality games".

    Here's how it looks guys-

    [I can't seem to put it on the website, so please use the link!]

    http://cl.ly/image/1x1o3T0u043v

    It is comparatively more obtrusive than the current "More Games" Button. The button is slidable to reveal more apps, and an 'x' to close it appears after 5 seconds. I've noticed it's about 33% taller than the "More Games" Button.

    ***HOWEVER***, it reappears EACH time the player selects the app from the multitasking bar...

    Another thing I noticed is that you DON'T have to hit that tiny 'x' at the right to close it (after 5 seconds, of course). You can tap anywhere above the Ad to close. I'm on an iPhone with a case that has a perfect ridge at the right, so it's a bit harder to hit the little 'x' than anywhere above the Ad.

    I hope that the "More Games" Button remains an option for Pro members at least (It is a good Ad, as it's not obtrusive unlike most ads)

    @SaladStraightShooter

    Can you confirm that the "More Games" Button remains as an option (for Pros, or for everybody)...and while you're at it, can you please clarify on my initial question,

    "Can Basic Members have their games featured in the GameSalad Distribution Network, if they are of great quality?"

    Thanks

    @SaladStraightShooter Will there be a way to see how many "impressions" and "clicks" are done through the GSDN?

    @SaladStraightShooter Thanks. Sounds great!

    Sounds very interesting. A good way to bring GS community closer together.
    So from what I get from it all is, I make a game of high quality, get pro. Submit if I am worthy. Then I go in the bundle with hundreds of other games waiting to be advertised as well. So is there a system as to which apps get shown, does it favor ice cap games more then other games or Gotm?

    Either way i can't wait for it to be implanted. Good Job :)
