Viewer Toggle able Orientation Frustrations

What is the difference between Device Orientation, Interface Orientation, and Device Rotation? Also, can I make it so that GS does not autorotate, if I want to do the rotation custom?

Thanks,
- Thomas

Edit: The new question is: Is there a way to make it so that no autorotation occurs while suing the viewer, or do you have to make an adhoc every single time?

try to not bump a thread 20 min and a hour after posting it, people will think you are impatient. if no one responds in a day, then by all means give it a bump, but this is a little too quick.

this page has some basic information on rotation:
    http://cookbook.gamesalad.com/tutorials/1/parts/2

but your best bet is to just play around with it.

Interface orientation is the orientation of the status bar and device orientation is the orientation of the device.

@BlackCloakGS - 'status bar'? I must be missing something.
    And what about Device Rotation?

@SnapFireStudios The status bar is the little bar at the top of the screen that you see on Springboard or on any non-fullscreen app. It has your carrier name, signal strength, wifi icon, time, location icon, battery icon/percentage etc.

@Utveckla_Games - Is there an option to display that bar? If not, why do we care about it?

@SnapFireStudios So far (as much as I can tell) no there is no option to show it. Also the reason it is so important is because that bar determines the orientation. So no matter what way you turn your iPhone, that bar will stay at the top. So if your phone is in landscape then the bar is at the top of that landscape mode app. (Try pulling down notification center to test where it is.) If it is in portrait mode then it is yet again at the top of the screen but in a smaller form like on Springboard. Understand what I'm getting at? :D

@Utveckla_Games - Well.. you can figure out the orientation of the Device Orientation, why would you need the Interface Orientation as well? And what of Device Rotation and my previous question.

If no one knows, I can mess around with it this afternoon. I was just hoping that someone could tell me the function of each real quick.

    Thanks,
    - Thomas

@SnapFireStudios Ok so I'll try my best to explain this:
    Device Rotation:
The physical rotation of the device that is allowed (in a software view: which way is the device rotated)

    Interface Orientation:
Where the status bar will be (Upside down from the top of the phone, right side up with the phone, on the left side of the phone, or on the right side of the phone)

Device Orientation: Which way you prefer to the user to hold the phone.

@Utveckla_Games - Thanks for the info, I'll just have to mess around with them so that I can really understand their uses.

    Also, what of this:
"Can I make it so that GS does not autorotate, if I want to do the rotation custom?"
    Maybe that's the Rotation attribute?

Haha thats a bit advanced for me. I agree with you @SnapFireStudios that we should test exactly what each one does and then post it so that others can know too. :D

if you read the page I posted earlier, it tells you how to do this. you would need to uncheck the checkbox next to each orientation you did not want to support.

@jonmulcahy - Except that doesn't actually work.. In the viewer It will still let me turn any way that I'd like, even if I only have one checked. Now that I think about it, I know I've done it before.. but I can't remember how.

Viewer ignores those settings. It only works in adhoc

@jonmulcahy - Ah yes, I remembered that just a few minutes ago ;)

I just realized how incredibly annoying a frustrating this is. :(( Since I want my app to respond to the device orientation, but not autorotate, I have to do an adhoc every time I want to test it.. X(

Please let me know if someone knows a way around this.

I did some investigation, and apparently Interface Orientation and Device Orientation do the exact same thing. At least as far as I can tell.
If anyone has possibilities for the above problem, I'm still looking for an answer.

P.S. Sorry if I'm bunping this a bit much, but I have to have this info so I can proceed with my project @-)

I have also now found out that you can find out if the device us upside down or right side up with Device Orientation. Nifty..

Bumpity bumpity bump! Haha ok in all seriousness you want to find a work-around for the adhoc problem right? :)
  • SnapFireStudiosSnapFireStudios Member Posts: 1,603
@Utveckla_Games - Correct. This basically renders the Viewer useless. I can make adhocs, but it takes much much longer.

Ok now please restate exactly what it is you need to accomplish. I got lost in all of the comments. :D All I know is that Adhoc is the only way to test something you are trying to do.

At this point I suppose I'll have to assume that this is not possible.. =((
