[USA] Publish your game in the Windows Store, earn $100/app.

atxryanatxryan Member, Microsoft Team Posts: 117
We've currently got a promotion where app developers can get up to $1000 for adding their apps to the Windows Store. This offer is for US-based developers* only. All you have to do is publish your app and submit them for eligibility qualification here: http://rj.cx/win8keepthecash.

Obviously you have to go Pro to be able to publish Windows Store apps using the GameSalad Creator. If you've been sitting on the fence, consider this a nudge to push you over. You could upgrade your account and still have plenty left over. :-)

Make sure to fill out this form after your app is certified and published in the store.

If you have any questions, just reach out to me via the forums. Good luck and happy publishing!!

Cheers,
-RYAN

*I know. A lot of GameSalad developers aren't based in the U.S. Unfortunately I can't change the terms of these offers.

    Hi,
Great promotion, is there any chance that it will be supported international or in the UK in the future?
    Many Thanks,
    Lewis

Not this particular promotion, but I've got a thread going on with some of my UK counterparts. Stay tuned!

Kind of... it's 10 apps per Store, Windows Store or Windows Phone Store. Currently GameSalad does not support exporting Windows Phone application packages, so that's why I only referenced the first 10. :-)

@atxryan - Is there a specific date we have to publish the apps by? I'm a bit busy now, but would love to take advantage of this offer in a month or so...

Not at this time. Students can generally get a free Windows Store account through their DreamSpark account. Another way to get a waived registration is if you have a BizSpark or other MSDN subscription.

    You've got until June 30th. :-)

Just don't wait too long, ok?

So every app that gets published gets the 100? Or is this like a contest and only certain apps that get picked?

    ----DISREGARD THE ABOVE QUESTION---- :)

Just for everyone else's knowledge who reads this thread. The promotion is not a contest. Every eligible app gets a virtual Visa gift card for the $100. Right now you should be asking yourself, well what's a an eligible app?! I encourage you to read the Terms. An example of an ineligible app would be to try to make 1 matching game and then clone nine others with different actors. The first matching game would be eligible. Your clones are not.

Yeah I asked that before I read the terms, that's why I said disregard. ;)

Sounds good but this "virtual" VISA card kind of scares me. Where can it be used? Is it only to be spent in certain MSFT stores or something? Where are the details of this virtual VISA card?
  • ChakkuChakku Member Posts: 1,513
It can be used wherever Visa cards are accepted, in many-most places on the web ;)

So I have a series of puzzle games and only the first puzzle game of that type will qualify for the promotion? Is this correct ?

Tempting... I don't know much about WIndows 8 hardware... I'd have to get a test machine.

Is this $300 Dell tablet a decent deal for Windows 8 testing? It looks like it has Windows RT 8... would that work?

    http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-10-tablet/pd?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

    Thanks!

    @Ebreeze
Potentially, that's correct. I can't answer definitively because I'm not running the promotion nor have I seen your puzzle games. If they are different enough from each other, they may each be eligible. But if they're just the same game with different actors, then likely not.

I haven't used a Dell XPS 10, but it should work for a test device. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip in it. For comparison, the Surface RT has a NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip. You should be able to find comparisons online. Keep in mind that this tablet runs Windows RT on an ARM-based processor, so it's not Windows 8 Pro. This means it can run any of the apps from the Windows Store, plus applications like Office that are compiled for ARM and bundled.

Regardless of which device you use, my blog post on sideloading will work for your app: http://ryanjoy.com/2013/01/sideloading-a-windows-8-app-onto-a-surface/

Sorry if these questions seem so elementary...

As stated above, a Dell XPS 10 (for example) would be a fine test device but do I still need a Windows 8 pc? To initiate the side loading of an test app? And if so wouldn't it make sense just to buy a Windows 8 tablet and get the best of both worlds?

Or if I buy a Windows RT only tablet can I initiate a side load from a pc running Windows 7?

Would a previously published app on a different app store be eligible?

as long as it is new to Win8 AND not a reskin of an existing Win8 app (if you have any).

i.e, release a animal matching game with new graphics as a cloud matching game.

So... if you have a free game, and want to break even, just publish to mac and windows. :P

    http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/eng/downloads#d-visual-studio-2012-update

Which version of Visual Studio do I need to do the side load?

Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows 8???

And I guess I can't run Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows 8 on a Windows 7 pc???

  • atxryanatxryan Member, Microsoft Team Posts: 117
    @sawkastee
Yup. VS Express for Windows 8 will get you everything you'll need. The AppSigner tool GS provides uses command line tools installed with VS Express. These tools for WinRT only come in a Windows 8 environment, so this will not work in Windows 7.
