Windows 8 apps vs. programs?

Hi all,
I'm still figuring out Windows 8 development and would love some help putting together some of the puzzle pieces.

There seems to be two different types of programs for Windows - "apps" which run in the Metro-style tile interface, and (let's call them) "programs" which can be launched from the desktop. When I'm using GameSalad to publish my game to Windows 8, am I creating an app or a program? (Please correct my terminology if you know the proper names).

If we are creating "apps", can they only be distributed through the Windows Store? Right now I'm looking into distributing games through Amazing but if this is true then it's a moot point.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Jenna
