Image with gradient appearing as bands/lines

I have a background png image that has a gradient effect and when I import it into GameSalad it appears with bands/lines rather than a smooth gradient. I read another post (which I can no longer find) which suggested saving as png24 or png32. I have tried this and it makes no difference. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Whether you save as an Png8 or Png24 Gamesalad will convert it to Png8 when it imports it, which reduces the colour density. The only way to stop this happening is to incorporate some transparency in the image, even by just making one of the very bottom corner pixels 1% transparent. This will then force Gamesalad to import it correctly at Png24 to retain the transparency, giving you all your colours back.

It's a bit of a workaround but it's been like this for ages, hope they fix it soon.

Top advice - I will give it try. Thanks for taking the time to explain - I would never have worked that one out! Much appreciated.

    . . . which reduces the colour density. . .
    Reduces 'bit depth'.

Absolutely right, I typed that whilst keeping one eye on my work, rookie mistake. I'm off to hang my head in shame...

@CodeWizard, awe but if you fix it we won't have to answer the same question over and over and over again in the forums! :(

We have a suspicion that this has been fixed in the nightly build. Anyone care to verify? :)

That's super quick CW, I'd love to test it out but I'm not going pro for another week or so. Can't believe how quick you guys tackled that though!

@CodeWizard This is a pic from a publish with 0.37 .. but i take it this procedure happens on import ... which means this image is probably from a 10.1 import

    @beefy_clyro
Yeah, looks like an import issue. :)

@CodeWizard I've reimported now so it should be overwritten with the new version and shouldnt have then reduced the bit depth ... I just have to do another build now :( #GetViewerWorkingWithNightlyBuilds

    Heh. Good idea.

you get banding on gradients,to stop this open the image in photoshop click on channels palette, click on either red, green or blue and see what colour is causing the most banding and add 0.3 noise to that channel import back into GS and see if its solved it if not keep adding noise until the banding disappears, you can also add to different channels until its completely removed.
because your adding noise to a channel and not the image you wont see any deterioration to your image

@gamedivision .. adding noise bloats the image file size, adding transparency is the better way of doing it
  • gamedivisiongamedivision Member Posts: 807
    ohh ok,didnt know that
  • beefy_clyrobeefy_clyro Member Posts: 5,394
@CodeWizard Well I done another adhoc after replacing the image in 0.37, loaded it on and its still banded :(
Not sure if its because its not a new image (its an overwrite) but surely that should of imported correctly regardless?

Ahh, perhaps our assumption is wrong. I'll tell the man in charge of that. :)
