Can I use GameSalad to create a game of these specs?
Hey all!
So hopefully someone here can help me out. I want to create an adventure/RPG computer game for my boyfriend that's personalized. I have some experience working with varying programming languages (C++, C#, Java, Python) but I'm pretty busy so I'm trying to find software that will help me. I was recommended to GameSalad but I wanted to know from the regular users if these specs are doable with GameSalad:
Personalized images (so his character and other characters can have their own faces/etc)
Multiple levels
Decent graphics (they don't need to be super good but i'd like more than just 8-bit pixels)
Ability to place objects/bosses in his way and have them fight
Ability to place "guides" in areas that he can ask questions
So, can I easily use GameSalad to create a game like this? I'm willing to pay probably up to $100 in terms of software, but I'd prefer to keep my budget lower...Also, I only have a Mac (it looks like I can use that with this software though, am I incorrect in saying that?) so that's another requirement since I don't have access to a PC regularly.
Thanks!
Kat

Personalized images, bosses, and NPC's would all be possible but the personalized images would have to be packaged with the game. You're not going to be able to access the device camera and take pictures to place on the characters in game because as far as I'm aware you can't access the camera in GameSalad yet.
Yes all of those are doable with GameSalad. But which platform is the game for? Will the final game run on Mac or Windows?
Gamesalad is free to use with a few limitations.
If you publish with the free version, you will have ads on startup of your games.
furthermore to publish your game, you will need a "apple developer license" which costs 99$ yearly.
If you want to publish to andriod you will need gamesalad Pro = 299$ yearly
But that also removes all forced ads from you games and gives the opportunity to alot more.
To sum up:
You can freely develope a game and see if the tool is for you.
But if you want make some $$$$$ i would recommed going for Gamesalad Pro and focus your energy on the appstore
As far as your specs are concerned:
Personalized images (so his character and other characters can have their own faces/etc) - Yes, easily can import images and use whatever graphics you can draw or find.
Multiple levels - yeah.. most people make a new scene to make a new level..depending on the depth of your game you might be able to do it all in 1 scene..but multiple levels are doable for sure
Decent graphics (they don't need to be super good but i'd like more than just 8-bit pixels) - the quality of the graphics depends on you... its not 8-bit (look at some examples).... but if you aren't an artist then what you come up with will look amaturish probably... but if this is just a personal project to impress a BF then do as you wish!
Ability to place objects/bosses in his way and have them fight - this one is your trickiest one.. of course it is possible in GameSalad...but does fighting include animation? if so that is a lot of work... you've gotta define "have them fight".. but no matter what you meant I can pretty much guess it is doable in GameSalad
Ability to place "guides" in areas that he can ask questions - Easy.
So, everything you've listed that yuou want to do is doable in GameSalad.
