Android Device for Testing

I've been a strictly Apple guy forever, but I guess it's time to get an Android phone for testing before publishing to Google Play. What are your recommendations for getting an Android phone to test games on? Can you purchase one without a contract? Is it best to go through Craigslist or eBay to find one cheap? And which phone do you recommend—Galaxy S3 or something else? Fortunately my daughters have Kindle Fires so I can test on those but I'm assuming it would be ideal to test on a phone too.

A friend of mine (doesn't use Gamesalad) told me they use Nexus devices at their office for testing their Android apps, and they're pretty happy with them. They have the S (discontinued), 4, and 7 I believe. Just don't drop them because they're pretty fragile. I'm pretty sure they're cheaper, too.

I use a Kindle Fire (prices dropping all the time) because the Kindle App store does SOOOOOO much better for me when it comes to selling apps than Google Play's store... I've stopped putting stuff into Google Play... just not worth the effort. Would rather test my apps on a Kindle and put them in the Amazon Kindle store and leave it at then when it comes to android apps...
