Flappy Bird!

Does anyone know how Flappy Bird has become an international phernomanon in the gaming world. Does anyone know how they promoted the game?

A gamer called "PewDiePie" uploaded a video on youtube of him playing the game, after that everyone started downloading it.

ps: he's the most subscribed YouTuber in the world with 21m+ subscribers

Well the game was also featured on a couple of IGN articles recently... that'll certainly spike a games download, especially since the article was about how simple and addicting it was

Finally got to 27pts after 2 days of playing, then I see my friends posting 44pts from their first day of gameplay..

edit: now I see people posting their 200+pts... never mind the doubtful ones that get 1000+

All of a sudden EVERYONE wants to do a Flappy Bird game. The success people will have with it will be the same as trying to do a Angry Birds game now. You will get bad reviews for trying to clone it and can effect any future releases you may have. Iron Pants is a clone of Flappy Bird and that has bad reviews for being a copycat game. Only being real here.

Absolutely true, @VeiraGames. But it won't stop people from trying! ;)

It seems like a big lottery.. I have a one touch simple game just like that, but more graphical and more in-depth scoring .. yet I think I have maybe gotten 20 downloads total since release...

It does seem like the Facebook feature / Share buttons is what gets the momemtum going as it lets people compete with real life friends (and is the one feature my game lacks)...

Wonder how much revenue they are making based on iADs. I'm sure it's a fair bit but nothing close to the amount of downloads. I'm guessing maybe 100k? That's a nice lump sum tho regadless

Pocket gamer had an interesting read as well. Proves that todays Media really do not understand what gamers do or do not want because they said if it was pitched to them, they couldn't see its appeal.

    Funny that.

    Now THAT'S a chart. :)

Oh, btw., I don't think that PewDiePie created the buzz around Flappy Bird, as you can see on the chart, the game was on #1 since mid-january, PewDiePie's video was uploaded on 27th ;) But having him playing your game definitely helps to spread the word even further!
    What website is this?

A quote from an article about "Flappy Bird":
It also explains the gold-rush insurgence of copycat games like Ironpants, which mistake Flappy Bird’s surprise success for a predictable design pattern rather than a confluence of accidents.

GSHelper will have a template online today. People started asking me to build one too. I really suck at the game. My high score is 5. At least on my template I can make it easier. So there my high score is... Er... 9 ;)

I hate Flappy Bird! It's no different to Line Birds or whatever which have been around for years.

    Don't believe the hype!

Thats the spirit! You may see success if you alter it just enough. Flappy Bird...... IN SPACE!

@iamcartez There won't be success. People can't put a price tag on this because the original is free. Even though the flappy developer is getting all this attention he ain't getting no money (maybe from ads but thats a different story I don't understand)
