Where do you start

So I just stumbled upon GS and looked through the forum. I find it a very cool program.
I already have a concept and wrote down everything on paper about how the game would work.

Do you normally start with the graphics or the programming part with all the variables first?

I start with programming. This way if I abandon a project the art isn't wasted.

I agree, I normally start the programming with just basic shapes and add graphics later.

yea most of my games start out with different color boxes and the display text behavior. once i start getting some of the gameplay nailed down I start adding in graphics. sometimes I grab any old image off of google to get it some personality while I work with it.

towards the end I input the real graphics and sound.
