Just passing along something awesome I found during my development of CAT-ACLYSM (download it, it's free!): TimelineFX
http://www.rigzsoft.co.uk/timelinefx-particle-effects-editor/

more effects can be downloaded for free here:

You can create an incredible amount of awesome effects using it, this is just a small sample of what you can do:

    It's a fantasic bit of software that I experimented with a long while ago now, but never used for my own projects, only because the style didn't fit what I was going for.

    Below's an example of a WIP game that never got finished, but uses a timelinefx generated explosion.

    image

    There's a trick to be careful of - make sure you preview the animation and that it is contained within the boundaries of the images.

    For example, if you have debris, or an expanding ball of an explosion, make sure the debris is visible within your image at all times. If your main explosion fits into a 256x256 image size, you may have to expand that to include all the debris trails.

    What this can lead to is huge image sizes as you wrestle with optimising the size of the images you use and the effect you want.

    QS =D

    yea they had a nice section of "toon explosions" that I used in CAT-ACLYSM. It fit the art style pretty perfectly.

    I found a ton of cool orb graphics that I'd love to use in a game someday :)
