    gamesalad is in beta the same way gmail was in beta.

    there are 3 tracks of the software

    final release - most stable
    release candidate - close to release
    nightly - for checking out new features only.

    so because it is not the final release should i be able to download a template and then use that template in the creator

    Yes you will be able to use templates with free GameSalad, just will not be able to access PRO features. What @jonmulcahy‌ was referring to is about the three different types of GameSalad creators: Stable Release, Release Candidate, and Nightly Build. GameSalad as a whole is still BETA.
