How big should the buttons be for iPhone and iPad games.

    From 2 pixel square upwards (or even 1)! Basically, that'll be the minimum for any touch on it. Obviously, for visual sake, you'll want them larger than that: for the iPhone though, being a smaller screen than the iPad, you'd probably make them smaller than an iPad version, but as long as the tip of a finger can touch it, it's OK; size, for the visual sake, its really up to you, depending on how many other buttons you have, as well, as a consideration.

    I generally try to make things you have to interact with at least 50x50 pixels.

    Smaller than that starts to get really tough to tap on accurately.

    The icons for the original iPhones and iPod Touches are 57x57 pixels if you want to use that as a guideline...

    Apple guidelines go down to around 20x20 I think

    From trial and error with GameSalad, I've found that 40-60 seems to work well for me. Also, you want to not have them too close together. I've gone down to 30 on one dimension if it helped with spacing issues between buttons.
