this is probably a stupid question to most of you out there
how do i put a background image in a scene?

    Just create an actor like any other and place it on the scene. Of course if its supposed to be a background it should measure the same pixel dimensions as your scene.

    Watch some tutorials and you will pick up the basics pretty fast.
