universal iphone ipad development technique

I was wondering if you guys use any techniques when developing games for ipad and iphone. I make one skeleton project that has all the logic for iphone and then make a copy for ipad and design the levels separately. But when I have to make an update I have to apply the changes separately on each project. Does any one use any technique such that making changes on one projects affects the other so I don't have to make change manually. The method I use is painful when I add new features.

    Id be interested to know if anyone makes ipad games without owning an ipad for testing. Is this something you can do and just hope for the best when you submit it? Id like to do ipad versions as well just have no way of testing or even know someone with an ipad for that matter.
