Speculation - What is Project Masala?

Project Masala: There are a few things we intentionally left off the roadmap as well. These are mostly stealthy projects that we can’t publicly talk about now for strategic reasons. You’ll notice an example of one of these on the roadmap called Project Masala. We included it on the roadmap because it’s coming out next month and you’ll know all about it soon enough. While I can’t say too much about it at the moment, I will say it’s one of the most exciting developments at GameSalad to date, and has the potential to change the game industry. It’s one of the features that falls into the melt your face classification I mentioned in my previous post. I’ll have more details to share next month, so stay tuned.

So... what does that mean? What could it be? I think it's fun to speculate. What would be the most exciting development at GameSalad, with the potential to change the game industry?

GameSalad on the Mac App Store - I don't think so. While I think that's a good strategy, would this really be the most exciting development at GameSalad? No... unless it included a really cheap price. GameSalad at $99 on the Mac App Store could get things going. Maybe the GameSalad team wants to follow in the footsteps of Pixelmator. I think Pixelmator is shaking up the industry a little, but Photoshop is still the standard.

I'm very happy with Pixelmator though. I'm doing some amazing things with it. I actually like it better than Photoshop. Pixelmator is fast, powerful and cheap.

iOS controller - What if GameSalad entered the hardware business, creating USB controllers for iOS devices? That would allow developers to create more hardcore games. While exciting, this also seems unlikely.

HTML 5 - I think this could be GameSalad leaving the desktop and going into the cloud. That would give the software PC support. Considering that Android support is coming... and that Rocket Engine was acquired by the GameSalad investors... I think this makes the most sense. Moving GameSalad to HTML 5 would also solve the problem of the GameSalad Creator software constantly needing to be restarted. It could also be used to deter users from using GameSalad as a prototype tool, as the data would be in the cloud.

I have this awful memory of GameSalad Direct that was promoted as being so wonderful. I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic, but I'm not getting my hopes up over rumors at this point.

Well not sure if this is face melting. But maybe it's folders and better organization of actors. Just my guess :-)

Maybe its a GameSalad version that runs on the ipad.

Or maybe speech to game technology ("GameSalad make a great game that just needs some new art" Poof great new .gameproject generated.)

Or maybe its Photoshop/illustrator built into GameSalad

Speculation is no good unless theres some ridiculous ideas out there to go with it. :)

TSB i'll forgive you if you PM me and spoil the surprise. LOL

But seriously how cool would it be to be completely swept off your feet with brand new information.

More speculation... Apple TV App Store ...perhaps Apple is working with GameSalad to turn the Apple TV into a gaming console. While cool, this also seems unlikely to be Project Masala, as that means Tshirtbooth has a testing device too. There would be too much secrecy around such a project for beta testers to be involved. I remember the stories of the iPad. Heh, from what I remember of the stories, it had to be used in a room with the windows blocked out.

Ok guys. I may get in trouble for telling you this but GS has come up with an easier way to make games.

All you will need to do now is enter a 200 word description of what you want your game to be and it will make the game for you, ART and all.

    its going to be cool

Will you be selling templates for these. Lol
  • PhoticsPhotics Member Posts: 4,172
Heh, seems like that would create a market for a new GameSalad textbook too... if it existed... which it doesn't.

We must be close. Tshirtbooth is trying to distract us! :)

If Gamesalad owns Rocket Engine, then it's obvious ;)

Games for Facebook, multi platform devices, MMOs and browser based game building (including building on iPad). You know I'm right.....

Facebook / Twitter is mentioned on the roadmap though.

I think HTML 5 / Rocket Engine seems to be the most likely theory so far.

That doesn't seem like Project Masala, as Facebook integration is listed for the fall.
  • StusAppsStusApps Member, PRO Posts: 1,352
All we need for Facebook apps is the ability to publish in flash or html5. It's just done through an Iframe dropped into a Facebook canvas. If the promised arcade 2.0 allows for better web publishing (without a specific GS plug in) then we'll be able to do this.

Face book integration is talking about the social stuff for our games not games on Facebook. Like posting high scores, Achievements, and stuff (without the URL workarounds). That's Facebook/Twitter integration.

And like Stusapps said if your right and its HTML5 then it also lets us do facebook apps. Talk about a massively awesome way to get more exposure. now all we need is GameSalad to accept vector art and we can always develop for Mac and GameSalad can resize to every possible format known to man. except android by the looks of the roadmap.

I very much doubt it has anything to do with html5 games yet.

As was said before in another thread, the tech is not quite there yet, even rocketpacks site talks about the need for webgl to be properly implemented in browsers (which it's not yet). Check out the first html5 facebook game made with rocketpack http://warimals.com . It is a long way off the level of complexity in the engine for GS type games.

I would love it to be this as it would put GS at the forefront of web based game technology and pioneers of the beta webgl stuff, but I doubt it.

"Project Masala... has the potential to change the game industry"

That's a pretty bold statement. If we look back, what events/tech have done that before? The wii? The internet?

Clearly the new GS CEO came from Skynet and has a a nice robotic arm that they are reverse engineering. Our games will now be able sync to mechanised skeleltons and chase us around urban areas and industrial facilities.

This is the only logical conclusion.

Maybe they will add an inspector that allow us monitor any attribute we want in real-time instead of using display text every second! I wish

HTML5 seems somewhat possible. Scirra construct 2 has a html5 game development tool similar to gamesalad. I like the idea of an iPad app for game creation although apple might not approve it, they've been known for disapproving any kind of app that lets you write code, generating code on a server might sound malicious.

Wikipedia describes Malsala as a mixture of spices, what if these spices are mixture of platforms. Mac, Windows, linux, iOS and Android perhaps? This would tie into the HTML5 theory. just a thought.

Although this isn't exactly industry changing.

Maybe there is code to what it is in the definition of Masala.

So here is the wiki info:

Masala or massala (Hindi: मसाला);(Bengali: মশলা); (Urdu: مصالہ‏) is a term used in South Asian cuisines (including Indian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani cuisines) to mostly describe a mixture of spices. A masala can either be a combination of dried (and usually dry roasted) spices, or a paste (such as vindaloo masala) made from a mixture of spices and other ingredients—often garlic, ginger, onions and chilli paste. Masalas are used extensively in Indian cooking to add spice and flavour and lose quality when not fresh

Not much help here, but I for one would think it would be pretty sweet if it was GS on the ipad.

Think about how "game changing" it would be to make game on the go without an actual computer. Just flip out your ipad while waiting for class and make some changes to your game.

Yeah laptop can be used for this, but ipad is 1/4 the price of a mac pro, so I think it would be pretty cool

I say it is HTML 5. Disney buys Rocket Pack. Steamboat Ventures is a Disney arm, and Steve Felter hails from Disney. One plus one equals three. And looking at the team at Steamboat Ventures, the board member for GameSalad is Beau Laskey, http://steamboatvc.com/bio.php?member=bl and would not be surprised if David Min, who is from Steamboat Ventures, is a board observer since he worked at Walt Disney as well as Felter.

Project Masala = HTML 5 output.

    JS

ps: This will put a lot of pressure on companies like Corona and Unity.
