just to anyone that didn't take the time reading the last pages on the TA thread.

I'm not sure what the need is to cut-and-paste Hodapp's response. But since you mentioned it, the reply highlights a bias against GameSalad games. Additionally, Hodapp was supposedly busy... so write 500 words instead of just checking out the game?

Yeah, I built hype. That doesn't change the fact that viewers of the site wanted to see the exclusive. And when they did see the screenshots, most were pleased with the quality of the work.

Heh, I'm not concerned with just ranking higher than Hurdle Turtle. That's not my standard of success. Actually, the standard is much MUCH higher.

baby steps, baby steps. I wouldn't get your hopes too high just in case.

I think Hodapp's response is fairly reasonable, at least from my perspective.

I've had lots of apps bomb on the App store, so I'm expecting a range from total failure to huge success. I don't know how it will turn out. I suspect that BOT will be my most successful game, but I don't know if it will surpass the popularity of The Unofficial GameSalad Textbook.

However, since I've worked so hard on this game, the success of BOT determines how I will proceed with App development. Even if BOT fails, I'll probably still make apps — but it will be just for fun.

Hodapp's later response was more reasonable. That's why I decided to release the screenshots on the Touch Arcade forums. There were lots of great comments about BOT after that. But even after that, Hodapp still didn't say anything... not "Nice work dude" or "Would you like an interview?" ...nothing. I think if I was running a review website, I'd be friendly with developers. Nothing unethical, obviously, but professional courtesy is nice.

I get requests for GameSalad reviews too. I don't dismiss all of them as crap. That's silly. I'm busy too, so I don't except the excuse. If people write to me in a friendly and professional manor, I generally write back. Hodapp found the time to insult me. It wasn't a critique of my work.

That's why I have more respect for 148apps.com - while I didn't agree with the overall tone their review, at least they reviewed my app and they responded to my emails.

Man... where to you find the time to work on BOT after running all these long threads?
  • jb15jb15 Member Posts: 602
Does anyone else think a lot of people think that the GS splash screen is just a "developer's" splash screen? As if GS was a company that made games, not software to make games?

    I type fast :)

Also, I'm stuck on the last two quests and the final stage. Inspiration isn't there yet. I like what I accomplished so far today though.

...and where is this? I haven't posted on the thread in over a week.

This thread is about GameSalad's rep. And clearly, the reputation is bad!

Maybe that's by design. It encourages upgrades to Professional. HA HA! :)

    And surprising too!
Until this epic saga, I've never even heard of touch arcade and when looking at the screen shots prompted a sign-up note, I've left as quickly as I went there.
But I love what he said about "the press will follow" ... so true!

Maybe they'll rename it "Rant Salad" once it goes version 1?

No no... it's a topping... Cool Rant Dressing.
  • xyloFUNxyloFUN Member Posts: 1,593
too bad we can't sell that dressing ... would bring in more money than the games ;)
  • butterbeanbutterbean Member Posts: 4,315
@Photics: Thanks on the ads thing, I don't think I would ever go that route, I was just curious, as I always thought it would cost a pretty penny :)

If we could convert "rants" into a useable energy source, or even better, less loading times, that would be cool!

    I will leave with this.

It is often that great artists are the ones that hate their own work, and it's this attitude of self-criticism that allows an artist to evolve and to reach true success and create better work.

It is arrogant for an artist to assume that his work is the greatest, or better, and then expect others to be in agreement. This only leads to failure.

I'm not targeting... these are just words of wisdom from the back of a Bazooka Joe wrapper.

Cool. I gotta start buying Bazooka Joe's.

Seriously Photics, please stop with the BOT talk. If you want to talk about it use your website or your development thread. I'm sick and tired of hearing about a game that as far as I'm concerned doesn't even exist.

I like how these comments appear after I'm done posting... which only leads me to respond.

My comments are relevant to the topic. How has your post contributed to the conversation olster1 or DreamLab?

I'm out there helping to make GameSalad relevant. You can stick your head in the sand if you want, but BOT is real regardless if you acknowledge it or not. It exists, I like it, others like it and it's launching soon. If you're serious about GameSalad development, you'll watch and learn.

I feel in a mischievous mood tonight, so I'll play "devil's advocate", or something...

    1) I've seen screenshots of BOT on the Touch Arcade forum - and they're looking really good.

    2) Hi Photics: Boto and the Isms was well before BOT; just sayin'.... ;-) ;-) ;-)

    3) Are you going to show the game software developer's logo or not? (Oh, that'll be GameSalad!)

The only thing I am tired of is you keep saying its going to be REALLY GREAT and REALLY popular. It just bugs me because you don't know yet. I have nothing against you or the game itself. But its just getting annoying hearing "bot this, bot that"

    thats all

I contacted GameSalad and asked if they wanted special recognition in the game. (I was prepared to make one of the levels a destroyed Austin, Texas - with a possible statue of the Salad Bowl icon.) I also asked about proper logo usage. I gave them the option of something crazy, or something simplistic. They didn't reply.

Maybe there's something wrong with my email. HA HA.

did you send it to tips@gamesalad.com or exclusives@gamesalad.com ?
  • olster1olster1 Member Posts: 396
    1. I posted then as I had just visited this thread.

    2. I say it "doesn't exist" as I believe there is no point speculating on little information until a final product in revealed. I think that way for every rumoured game or console ect. I'm sure your game IS great but until you show anything it is nothing to me. (post an image on your dev thread?)

    3. Time after time I see you hijacking threads and turning them into your rants about BOT or the text book.

    4. Moaning about how a site doesn't want (or it too busy) your exclusive doesn't help make game salad relevant.

    5. I am serious about gamesalad and will most definitely learn from you.

    6. You come across as very arrogant and up your own arse.

That is that last I'm going to say on the matter.

Also, I didn't know what "Boto and the Isms" was. But after a visit to YouTube I found out. Cute game and the backgrounds are nice.

Touch Arcade not wanting to preview my game is fine... what Hodapp posted is what bothered me. Somehow there was plenty of time to post lots of rebuttals, but no time to actually check out if the game was actually good? That's what's this thread is about... the bias against GameSalad games. That's why BOT is related.

The unfortunate truth is, that GameSalad's biggest asset is its biggest liability.

Because pretty much *anyone* can learn how to use it - and because template games have made it even easier to get something onto the app store - the general quality of games varies wildly.

Add to that the fact that the basic software is free, and you have literally anyone uploading any old games to the app store, regardless of quality.

Personally I think it's exciting that anyone can make a game. There's the scope there for something really cool and/or original to come from a 10yr old, or a 65yr old, for example.

Unfortunately, the truth is, that although making games is pretty easy now, making a *good* game is still really, really hard.

So, regardless of SDK, you're going to get a lot of !@#$% made. But because GS is free, you get a lot of !@#$% made that actually gets published, and the first thing people see is the GS Splash screen.

I've said it many times, it's not the SDK - it's the person *using it* that counts.

Touch Arcade's attitude is sad to see and a tad blinkered, though not particularly unexpected. Fortunately there are alternatives (Air Supply got reviewed by a wide spectrum of sites/people for example) and the actual community on the TA forums is usually spot on with their criticisms/suggestions.

It's a double edged sword really. On the one hand, there's no barrier to entry, so we have some awesome games being made by this community. On the other hand, the low barrier to entry means any old !@#$% *can* be published.

    It's a shame, but them's the breaks!
