Stating that "most GameSalad games are not good" is a dangerous statement. I would be very careful about slandering businesses that use GameSalad as a developmental tool. This statement is harmful to my business, and the business of my fellow GameSalad developers. Being an Independent Developer who utilizes GameSalad, I should not be stereotyped that our games are 'not good' because of the tool we use to create them.
It is not uncommon in this day and age for a lawsuit to arise out of a Tweet, Blog Posting, Facebook rant, or any other type of comment on a website.
I recommend that TA Editors cease and desist from any further public slander which would further harm my brand of iOS games.

I'm not a lawyer, but the way I understand libel cases in The United States (as it's in writing) is that it has to cause damages and it has to be a false statement.
Example: olster1 called me arrogant. Could I sue?
Sure, I could sue... but I wouldn't win.
1 - I'd have to prove damages. I smirked after reading, so clearly I'm not suffering emotionally. It's not hurting my Internet Publishing business either.
2 - It would have to be false. I could argue that it's more about confidence than arrogance, but many of my friends would agree that I'm arrogant. HA!
So... now I apply that to GameSalad.
Are most of the GameSalad games not good? Does it really matter what Hodapp says about GameSalad?
Many developers here seem to be learning about Touch Arcade for the first time today.

Because pretty much *anyone* can learn how to use it - and because template games have made it even easier to get something onto the app store - the general quality of games varies wildly.
Add to that the fact that the basic software is free, and you have literally anyone uploading any old games to the app store, regardless of quality.
Personally I think it's exciting that anyone can make a game. There's the scope there for something really cool and/or original to come from a 10yr old, or a 65yr old, for example.
Unfortunately, the truth is, that although making games is pretty easy now, making a *good* game is still really, really hard.
So, regardless of SDK, you're going to get a lot of !@#$% made. But because GS is free, you get a lot of !@#$% made that actually gets published, and the first thing people see is the GS Splash screen.
I've said it many times, it's not the SDK - it's the person *using it* that counts.
Touch Arcade's attitude is sad to see and a tad blinkered, though not particularly unexpected. Fortunately there are alternatives (Air Supply got reviewed by a wide spectrum of sites/people for example) and the actual community on the TA forums is usually spot on with their criticisms/suggestions.
It's a double edged sword really. On the one hand, there's no barrier to entry, so we have some awesome games being made by this community. On the other hand, the low barrier to entry means any old !@#$% *can* be published.

You can always bring suit. However, good luck with not getting thrown out of court with such a claim. First Amendment. Almost impossible to prove its false since its a matter of opinion. Other problems. Rather than getting so mad about what is being said how about people channel that anger into making better games. The real point is that most games on the app store are not good.

It's the truth. How can you try to sue them. Anyone in there right mind would agree that a majority of game published with game salad are not good games at all. Good luck with your lawsuit.
Wow this is a very lengthy but informative thread. I think TA's first response to your thread there is inappropriate and very rude. But what can we do it's all about business to them. They just dont want to review games that they think wont make a big impact on the iOS game community and on their websites. It's like you seeing a 0.99 game in itunestore that you know would suck because of the icon, screenshot and bad reviews. The question is are you willing to risk of buying it and losing 0.99 cents? Some of the people might out of curiosity coz it's only 0.99 cents but to them its a different story. So i'd say let it go wild on the appstore first and see if it really makes a big success and everything will fall into place.
It is often that great artists are the ones that hate their own work, and it's this attitude of self-criticism that allows an artist to evolve and to reach true success and create better work.
It is arrogant for an artist to assume that his work is the greatest, or better, and then expect others to be in agreement. This only leads to failure.
I'm not targeting... these are just words of wisdom from the back of a Bazooka Joe wrapper.
+1 to this. Reading this made me miss Bazooka joe.
I read the entire thread over at T.A, and I'm appalled at the snobbery and immediate dismissal of your game, stating "most games made by GS are not good"
It's clear after reading the thread (at T.A) that you've really put 200% effort into this game, and I think that was very judgmental, unfair, and clearly, biased opinion.
I think your response to them was very classy.
It's almost like trying to get into the Polo Club and getting turned away b/c you're not wearing the right clothes, or you're not toting the Black American Express card.
Here's what I think.
2 tears in a bucket... mother F-it.
There are plenty of other sites out there that will review BOT, and see the polish and effort you've put into it. Most of all, let the players be the judge, because if it's a good game, gets good reviews, it could be very successful.
I would contact 148apps.com and ask them to review it... that would be my first pick.
My only advice would have been to post screenshots and previews right away instead of holding off, but I understand the flip side of it, and your reasoning for not wanting to do so.
At any rate, don't listen to nay sayers, nose pickers, and haters, and keep making good games
yea, TA has never ever responded to any of my game requests. I know they a probably get 1000's a week, but it really does seem they only care about the HUGE studios.
butterbean said: I would contact 148apps.com and ask them to review it... that would be my first pick.
I just sent them an email, to see if they're interested in an ad-hoc preview.
The main reason they weren't my first choice is that their review of my textbook was rather harsh. (It got three stars, but the wording was brutal.) Sure, the interface could be better, but there was very little discussion about the content of the book. The reviewer got hung-up on the price of the book and the layout. I'm concerned that they might find some small detail wrong with BOT and get stuck on it... like the loading times... or maybe they might not understand the controls right away. I think a bad review is usually worse than no review.
Photics really looking forward to the launch will definitely buy purely on the basis of such an interesting 11 page log of the game which was so helpful! I hope 148apps.com review it and make TouchArcade look a tad silly!
@dreamlab and others....your contribution to the threads has been nil. From what iv seen all you have done is pick apart a project and derailed the thread! He can't provide you more info e.g. a trailer before he has finished it! What you call arrogance I would call self-confidence what is the point in saying lets hope it charts or does well as that mentality leads to it doing just that!
I think Gamesalad needs to seriously consider its reputation as even great game such as airsupply, bumps, grisly manor and potentially BOT, cannot rescue the brand from the bad press it is receiving. Surely there needs to be a minimum fee e.g. £200 to publish with GS and that will most likely kill most of the crap apps that are being produced by gamesalad.
Maybe GS should consider buying (% off the the yearly pro price) splash-screen space on great GS games. Instead of getting known for all those horrible games (published with the free version splash screen).
dhondon said: Maybe GS should consider buying (% off the the yearly pro price) splash-screen space on great GS games. Instead of getting known for all those horrible games (mainly published with the free version).
Well, they tried that. "Accelerator"
From what I see, it was a fail. But, it is not over yet. Maybe it will succeed some day..
Things really changed around here in the aftermath of GS direct. The problem is that there are just too many variables to know which one has really caused the problem (I'm a science teacher, can you tell?). It could be that losing people like FMG has hurt this community, or the switch from a culture of free template sharing to paid template selling, or it could be the change of express from $99 to $0. My guess is that it is a bit of all three. The first two possibilities are not going to change back to the way they were, but my hypothesis is that going back to $99 for iOS publishing and $0 for web only could really help the GS reputation in the long run.
cbt said: From what I see, it was a fail. But, it is not over yet. Maybe it will succeed some day..
I think they could relaunch it as a competition. They just got 6.1 million dollars. There should be some more marketing. A game development competition could make that happen. The winner could get some cash and a publishing contract through Accelerator.

Thats not what the accelerator program is and or was. It would be one thing to get Paid a couple hundred a game to leave the GS logo on. It would be something completely different to give a percentage of every sale to GameSalad because its did one of the easy parts of putting an app on the app store for you. You know clicking the publishing button. Publishing is a piece of cake and the stigma they have from all the crappy games with GameSalad at the beginning of them is not going to motivate me to give them a cut of my sales so they can list it under their name and have their logo on it. They need to distance themselves from the junk. and find a way to make their brand desirable. Another big hurdle is going to be getting rid of that loading wheel from all apps and provide a massive plethora of options for that. none of which should be by default. that would further diversify the ways we can present our games along with making it harder to pick out the crappy games made with GameSalad.
people need to stop blaming their failures on GS reputation or whatever. you may not get featured on TA front page because they have a prejudice against GS (and with motive) but if your game is good, you will manage to get on your own. forget GS brand. make your OWN brand. make they trust YOU. make they want YOUR games. no matter if your making a acoustic cover, illustrating a kids book or making games with gamesalad. isn't it how the game industry, and actually all industries work?
fremachuca said: people need to stop blaming their failures on GS reputation or whatever.
I really don't agree with you.
Reputation DOES matter when getting reviews from huge websites. Which leads you to success.
I think it only effects that part of the expected "success". Because, I'm almost sure that only 6%-8% of iDevice users are aware of game development tools. So, the reputation of GS does NOT effect your sales. If you have a good game, you can always be a "success". But, when it comes to getting reviewed so players can hear about your game, that's where GS gets kicked to the end of the line.
But still, if you have a great game (Bumps, Air Supply etc.) you can still get reviewed anywhere.
@fremachuca: With all due respect, I don't think anyone here is blaming GS for failures. (at least I'm not) We're just pointing out the harsh reality that people will dismiss a game and make rude comments when it's made with GS.
I honestly thought T.A was getting over it, but I was shocked at the most recent post on BOT. It was a blatantly rude dismissal of the game, and it clearly stated "most GS games are not that good". He even went on to say if devs were "serious" about development, they wouldn't use GS as their development tool. You can deduce what he's saying about GS developers.
He didn't even really say in there, "prove us wrong" or, "most GS games aren't good, but we look forward to seeing you change the stigma that is attached"
It's a sad reality, but the only thing left to do is to keep pushing forward, find other avenues of marketing, and prove the nay-sayers wrong.
im sorry if I came a bit harsh. but someone had to say this. of course what i said isn't meant to everyone in the community. after all, we have some serious game developers over here.
but what i see in abundance over here is people complaining about everything because of their failures. yes i do believe this is the case. first pro was to expensive. now people have pro and TADA the fact you have pro doesn't transform you into a more capable game developer. then we NEEDED iADS. its going to make everyone RICH! oh god what a waste of time that was huh? now we need to publish to EVERY working device on the whole world. androids, web, iPad, desktop, browsers, mobile browsers, windows, linux, etc.
and the worst part is the CREATOR, the most important part is still a piece of crap. you can't multi select, you can't lock layers, you can't edit actors without leaving your scene. you dont have arrays, you don't have parenting, and yeah YOU STILL have to close GS once in a while. not every 5 min like before. but every 20. bla, bla, bla, bla.
and about TA. its a business. hodapp's post was clear as day and very professional. try sending email's to every professional game site on the web and see how many of them actually take the time to respond to "unknown game developers".
oh and to @photics. i gotta agree that you do sound arrogant talking about bot. if you want all the exclusive interview popstar crap, try being a acknowledged game developer first. and hey what do you know, the screens you released are not so bad after all! maybe this game is fun. maybe you could even have gotten a feature on TA, if you released your screens way back and built hype on something REAL. not just biased developer words. or do you trust everything everyone says?
fremachuca said: maybe you could even have gotten a feature on TA, if you released your screens way back and built hype on something REAL. not just biased developer words.
Maybe you're not following the story correctly.
1 - If I'm so arrogant about BOT, and my opinion so biased, then why is a common response to the screenshots, "Better than I expected". Also, it was a good story that Touch Arcade walked away from. I am a recognized developer, as my textbook is popular and it has helped lots of people. It was a story that would have been newsworthy for 2-3 communities... Touch Arcade, GameSalad and Photics.com.
2 - This thread is about GameSalad's reputation. It's absolutely clear that GameSalad is not respected at Touch Arcade. I don't see how this outcome would have been any different — unless I completely hid the fact that BOT was made with GameSalad. That's not an objective of the project. BOT is to show that professional games can be made with GameSalad. So while I'm planning to initially downplay the "Made with GameSalad" aspect of BOT, the long-term plan is to use BOT as an example of what can be done with GameSalad — and then point people to the textbook.
@Fremachuca: I do agree with the screenshots, I think it should have been the first thing he posted on the thread, I'm actually surprised the thread kept going as long as it did without screenshots. That could have put off hodapp as well.
I still don't agree with the comment that he made about serious developers not using GS as their tool. That's a pretty bold statement imo to say that all of us here using GS aren't really serious about making games, when it's quite the contrary with a handful of us. (Granted, I think 95% of his post was on point, and accurate)
He basically said in clear terms, if you're a serious developer, go and use another tool.
Tshirtbooths Tiny Balls game looked amazing, the interface, menus, and polished levels looked like it could have been made with any SDK.
I do agree that people need to stop asking for more features and blaming the tool for their failures, there are people using other SDK's and don't have top 100 hits either.
The truth is, fabulous games have been made with GS, Air Supply is one of my favorites, and there's a huge fan base, and I'm surprised T.A didn't feature the game when it's been on N&N, had more reviews than any other game, and is currently sitting on "What we're playing" on the front page of the app store.
I'm one of those who says that gamesalad is to expensive for what it offers: No Coding, but what else? (The "Crown" offers everything w/ coding for 199, 149 for students)
If GS wants reputation, I see only one way:
A paid version of GameSalad, cheaper and no Free versions. Or charge an amount(30-50) for each game before to be uploaded to the appstore.
butterbean said: I'm actually surprised the thread kept going as long as it did without screenshots. That could have put off hodapp as well.
Ever see a commercial for a comedy and then they put all the best parts in the commercial? So you sit through a 90 minute movie waiting for the jokes, but you've already seen them?
What about The Matrix? I thought that movie was going to be lame... What is the Matrix? WHAT IS THE MATRIX?! I didn't care. I thought it was a lame movie with people in leather trench coats. But when I saw it... WOW... I was impressed.
I'm marketing BOT like that... the screenshots were more than I wanted to reveal. I was trying to save the surprise a little longer.
That's great for the movie biz, but i don't think it works well for games, especially those on the iOS. You're marketing to people with limited attention spans, and someone else can steal your wool in a matter of seconds, and they've already forgotten about you.
I think you should post screenies right away, and slowly post more screenshots telling your story, and how game development is moving along.
Check out the "Paper Monsters" thread over at T.A. I think he did a great job with his thread, and he's caught the attention of people namely because the screenshots tell the entire story, which is why screenshots are one of the most important pieces in marketing your app when it's up on the app store.
You don't have to reveal "all" your secrets with screenshots, but putting out a handful doesn't hurt.

Hey JlmC, I "liked" your response because that is exactly how I saw it back then when I realized that gs will have a hard time selling a $500 product to an audience of which the majority can not recover that amount. I think that the goal should not be to send gs $500 and our time is ... worthless!
Also, the student edition of Corona is only $49.00 unless that has recently changed? Not sure.
While there are some zealots who preach PRO, the next few months should be interesting ones because sooner or later, they have to wake up and smell the coffee
20 some years ago, I produced a CD for a band and when the shrink wrapped boxes came back from the duplication factory, I made an appointment with the local radio station. The CD featured one of the best Christmas songs ever written .... they threw it in the garbage without listening to it.
I learned an important lessons that day!
One day, gs will look back at 2011 ... and the millions they "had".
P.S. Those of you who are not familiar with venture capital, please know that if you get 6 million, you are expected to pay back 20 to 60 million in five years or less! (My source of info on that is "The Web Startup Success Guide" which is a great book to read)

I "liked" your response because that is exactly how I saw it back then when I realized that gs will have a hard time selling a $500 product to an audience of which the majority can not recover that amount.
